‘It Was A Tough Game’ - Conte Reflects On Inter’s Defeat Against Sevilla

Inter Milan head coach Antonio Conte struggled to hide his disappointment as he reflected on his side’s 3-2 defeat against Sevilla in the Europa League final at the RheinEnergieSTADION on Friday night.

Conte believes Sevilla used their experience in the Europa League to edge past the Nerazzurri.

Inter Milan struck first inside the opening five minutes through Romelu Lukaku from the penalty spot.

Luuk de Jong’s equalized for Sevilla on the 12th minute mark before scoring another to put the La Liga side ahead, but Conte’s men hit back thanks to Diego Godin nine minutes before halftime.

The game was heading for a stalemate before Diego Carlos’ stunning bicycle kick took a ricochet off Lukaku into his own net to give Sevilla yet another victory in the Europa League final.

In an interview with the media after the game, Conte admitted Inter were unlucky to concede late in the game and insists it was a tough game in Cologne.

“It was a tough, balanced game where in the second half one incident could change it. We had the opportunity, but instead there was that unlucky deflection off Romelu, so inevitably it became very difficult there,” the former Juventus boss told Sky Sport Italia.

“Sevilla had been lowering the intensity and the quality of their passing. We have regrets to a degree, as the team gave everything it had against a team with a great deal of experience that was accustomed to these occasions and won the Final many times. In the end, that made the difference.”

“These lads worked hard, grew so much and have improved. They reached the Europa League Final, many were at their first experience in Europe, so between the Champions League and Europa League, at least many of our young players gained experience for the future. That is important going forward, also for self-confidence.”
